Hummingbird Home Decor
Sam, short for Samantha is the owner of Hummingbird Home Decor. With two different locations in the Canggu area, Sam’s been providing high-quality wallpapers to help give locals, business owners, and western expats the feeling of making a house a home.
So tell me a little bit about how you got started.
K: Hey good morning Sam, thanks again for meeting with me. Oh man, what a week… Anyways, tell me a little bit about how you started Hummingbird Home Decor.
S: Actually, I didn’t start it but it was my ex-husband’s business. I had originally just decided to holiday in Bali for 3 months and decided to stay for…. well it’s been about 8 years now.
K: Wow, wow! That’s a big jump! Was there a moment that you thought “Yes, I’m going to do it, this is happening” or did it happen gradually?
S: It happened gradually, things just started falling into place.. I originally opened a high-end pajama store here in Bali but sadly things didn’t quite work out how I had planned, a bit of wishful thinking there... Afterward, I went into business with my (ex)husband and eventually took over the business entirely and now we’ve done installations for some of the most popular restaurants and hotels in Bali, although I still love to do in-home wallpaper decor as well.
Skinner Ohrami
A surrealist artist in Canggu who's challenging social norms and shining light on mental health awareness through her artwork.
So Skinner, I know it’s a loaded question but, tell me a little bit about your childhood. How’d you get into painting?
S: Well, my Dad is a painter as well, although his main job is taking construction gigs. I actually didn’t know much about my Dad growing up since he was always traveling for work….
Skinner first started painting in secret during her childhood, knowing her Mom really disapproved of her artwork or being creative in that space. Even though Skinner’s Dad is an incredibly talented artist, she was shunned for doing art as her Mom viewed it as an “unrespectable profession.”
S: I grew up with a chip on my shoulder, always being told I was never good enough, especially when I was constantly being compared to my older brother — my Mom’s favorite.
K: Fuck, that’s rough. I can imagine that it was hard to build confidence too when you had outer influences telling you that you weren’t enough. P.S. I hope you know, you’re totally, more than enough, you’re amazing dude.

“Like many other young entrepreneurs who set their sights on creating a name for themselves, Wulan (pronounced Woo-luh-ah-nnn) had a dream of starting her brand here in Bali. Coming from a town located in West Java, she was approached by an Indonesian family who helped her achieve her early dreams of completing her degree in tourism management, along with having early exposure to different work environments. Wulan explains how she had so many different feelings about taking help from someone and admittedly, I understand. There’s a sense of vulnerability from letting someone help you — like the feeling of trusting someone new or starting a new chapter. Like most new things, it can feel really uncomfortable!”
